The Melbourne Centenary Florin is my personal favourite of the entire Australian Pre-decimal range. It encompasses several elements of collectability and desirability for any keen collector.
- low mintage of 75,000 with only 54,000 avoiding the melting pot.
- The introduction of these florins sparked controversy due to the naked rider being portrayed, (note: this was a conservative society in the 1930's).
- Their initial reception was quite mild as they were being sold for 3 shilling each (1 shilling premium above face value) in a time of significant economic struggle.
- Many examples remain in high quality due to the commemorative nature, they were not intended to be heavily circulated/spent.
Note: very light surface blemish on reverse beneath the tail of the horse
