Great Southern Land 2024 1oz Silver Proof Chrysoprase Coin
This beautiful 1oz silver proof coin features an Australia-shaped insert of chrysoprase, an eye-catching green gemstone also known as ‘Australian jade.’ Deriving its verdant color from nickel, the gorgeously green insert perfectly epitomizes the lush habitat and remarkable biodiversity of Australia’s rainforests.
Known by the familiar epithet ‘Great Southern Land,’ Australia is an island continent of extraordinary landscapes and biodiversity. Among its most remarkable natural environments are the rainforests of northern and eastern coastal regions. These rainforests comprise tropical, sub-tropical, and cool-temperate habitats characterized by high rainfall, lush growth, and dense treetop canopies. They support a rich array of Australian animals and insects, as well as thousands of plant species.
Struck by The Perth Mint from 1oz of 99.99% pure silver in proof quality, the coin is issued as legal tender under the Australian Currency Act 1965. The Perth Mint will release no more than 5,000 of the Great Southern Land 2024 1oz Silver Proof Chrysoprase Coin.
Design
The coin's design encircles an Australia-shaped insert of chrysoprase, a gemstone that derives its green color from nickel. Found in Queensland and Western Australia, chrysoprase—sometimes known as ‘Australian jade’—makes an eye-catching jewelry stone when polished.
Celebrating the flora and fauna of Australia’s iconic rainforest, the coin depicts (clockwise from top-right) a flying fox, a possum, a tree snake, a kingfisher, a crocodile, a butterfly, a tree frog, a cassowary, an orb-weaving spider, and other birds. The design also includes representations of plant life and incorporates the ‘P125’ mintmark, signifying The Perth Mint’s 125th anniversary in 2024, as well as the coin’s weight, purity, and 2024 year-date.
The obverse depicts the Dan Thorne effigy of His Majesty King Charles III, along with the monetary denomination.
