Obverse: Laureate head of Septimius Severus facing to the
right, legend surrounds, “SEVERVS PIVS AVG”. Reverse: Africa stands forward, head turned to the right, draped and wearing helmet terminating in an elephant’s trunk and holding long spear in left hand, lion stands facing right by her feet, legend surrounds, “P M TR P XV COS III PP”.
A scarcer type, struck to commemorate Septimius Severus’ visit to his homeland of
Africa in 207 AD, from an old collection with unilateral olive grey toning.
Lucius Septimius Severus was a Roman Emperor who ruled from 193-211 AD. He rose to power after a period of political instability and civil war, and was known for his military campaigns in Africa and the Middle East. He is also remembered for his extensive legal reforms and his patronage of the arts.
